Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is laying off more than one-third of his campaign staff as he falls in 2024 presidential primary polls.
The cuts are across multiple departments and will amount to 38 positions, including the roughly 10 event planning staffers whose positions were axed earlier this month, according to Politico.
“Following a top-to-bottom review of our organization, we have taken additional, aggressive steps to streamline operations and put Ron DeSantis in the strongest position to win this primary and defeat Joe Biden,” DeSantis campaign manager Generra Peck said.
The governor’s campaign has been struggling with fundraising after bringing in $20 million during the second quarter of 2023. Many of that came from donors who had already given the maximum amount and are legally unable to donate again.
Additionally, DeSantis has been dropping in polls overall since he announced his campaign. He is still second to former President Donald Trump, who is receiving more than half of the Republican primary votes on average in polls, according to FiveThirtyEight.
